Golden Rail
Ale House Trivia
What year did The Golden Rail open? 1977
Before 1977, what was The Golden Rail Building used for? It was a
residence, and also a beauty salon, but it's real history goes back over 100
years when the original part of the building was used as a toll booth for North
Plank Road.
You're kidding, aren't you?
No, we're not.
There was a wooden bridge over the small creek that runs behind the Golden
Rail. In order to cross, a toll was collected. The Golden Rail
is on "Old North Plank Road" which was the original road
between Newburgh and Wallkill, not the main road now known as Route 32 or North
Plank Rd. We understand that pictures exist, but we haven't been able to
locate them yet.
What is the full name of the "Rail?" It's formal name
is "The Golden Rail Ale House."
Is there any truth to the rumor that when the owner turned 18, he had his first
legal beer at the Golden Rail? Yes. It's true. The other
half of the rumor is that he enjoyed it so much that he hasn't
left since.
How much beer has been served at The Golden Rail
since it opened?
A lot.
When The Golden Rail opened, how many different beers were offered?
They regularly offered six beers. Budweiser (draught and bottled), Miller, Schaefer,
Pabst, Heineken and Lowenbrau. Occasionally, you might find cans of
Rheingold, Schafer or Knickerbocker.
Why no light beers or microbrews? Because light beers weren't
invented yet, and microbrewing was unheard of.
How many beers does The Golden Rail serve?
There are about 18 on tap and more than
70 different bottled varieties.
Is The Golden Rail really an "English" pub?
Yes, it very
closely resembles a typical English Pub in both atmosphere and decor.
Was the Golden Rail really
featured in the movie SUPERTROOPERS?
Yes, the bar was closed for two days while it was transformed into the
"Thin Queen Tavern." Old North Plank Road was closed for the car
chase scene which ended in the Golden Rail parking lot. All of the indoor
scenes were filmed inside the bar. The "Thin Queen Tavern" sign which
was in the movie hangs on the wall above our stage area.
